69 VIEWS FROM THE BOTTOM // A PERFORMANCE LECTURE is occupied with an unambiguous task: how to generate sexually perverse and racially contaminated images that can deflate the erected monolithic sexuality reproduced in mass for white masculinity. Shifting the agency away from the phallus to the anus, three performers, visibly marked as men of color, embrace the act of receiving penetration as a philosophical and political grounding point. Can a sexual position be sedimented into an identity, a way of being in the world? Can bottomhood be viewed beyond the self, as a social vantage point that can foster a together-ness from below? Can hitting rock bottom be a political alternative to ascending to the top?
